The pediatric physical therapist is a highly trained professional specializing in the treatment of pediatric patients with pelvic floor dysfunction. This includes a range of symptoms such as daytime wetting, night time wetting, increased or decreased frequency of voiding, pain with urination, constipation, fecal incontinence, and/or fecal withholding.
The therapist employs various techniques to address these issues. Manual therapy is used to provide hands-on treatment, while therapeutic exercises are prescribed to strengthen and relax the pelvic floor muscles. Biofeedback therapy and neuromuscular reeducation are utilized to enhance awareness and isolation ability of the pelvic floor muscles. Core strengthening exercises are also incorporated into the treatment plan.
In addition to these interventions, the therapist provides patient and family education to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the condition and its management. Some of the conditions that may require therapy for pelvic floor dysfunction, urinary incontinence, or bowel incontinence include increased or decreased urinary frequency, daytime and bed wetting, constipation, bowel leakage, urinary urgency, pain with urination, frequent urinary tract infections, and incomplete bladder emptying.
