Dr. Charmaine Quijano, PT, DPT obtained her BS/MS degree in Physical Therapy in 1996 from Long Island University (LIU), where she graduated Summa Cum Laude. She received both the Academic Excellence and Research Excellence Awards during her time there. Despite the challenges of having two young children and working full-time as a clinician, she made the decision to further her education and pursued her transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy degree, which she successfully completed in 2008.
In an effort to give back to the Physical Therapy profession, Charmaine served as a Clinical Instructor at Long Island University Center for Physical Rehabilitation (LICPR) while working there. Since 2004, she has also been an Adjunct Professor at the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at LIU.
Charmaine sought to gain exposure to various physical therapy settings after graduating and took a position at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, now known as New York-Presbyterian Hospital. During her time there, she completed rotations in inpatient and outpatient orthopedic, neurological, cardiac, and burn rehabilitation.
In 1999, Charmaine joined LIUCPR where she had the opportunity to develop advanced manual therapy skills, including myofascial release. She took her first John F. Barnes Myofascial Release (JFB MFR) course in 2004 and has since completed all the advanced MFR courses, earning her the designation of an Expert MFR therapist.
During her tenure at LIUCPR, Charmaine served as the Clinic Director and initiated the Women’s Health & Aquatic Programs. She left LIUCPR in 2009 after more than 10 years of service.
Charmaine is dedicated to lifelong learning and has completed over 70 post-graduate continuing education courses. While she has acquired a variety of advanced clinical skills, she considers JFB MFR as her primary treatment approach. Through JFB MFR, Charmaine has learned to deeply listen to her clients’ bodies and determine the most effective ways to facilitate their healing process. She aims to empower her clients by creating a space where they can learn how to heal themselves.
In addition to JFB MFR, Charmaine incorporates other manual therapy techniques, therapeutic exercises, and neuro-muscular re-education methods she has learned from various institutes such as Herman & Wallace Institute, Arvigo Institute, Institute of Physical Art, Upledger Institute, and Jones Institute. This combination of approaches allows her to effectively and efficiently help her clients find relief, manage their symptoms, and regain optimal health and wellness.
Charmaine has completed Level 3 training from the Arvigo Institute and is certified in the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy (ATMAT®). She hopes to utilize this certification to assist her clients in improving their pre-conception health and fertility.
